On Friday, March 11th, 2011, the Tohoku region of Japan was rocked by a huge earthquake and tsunami, causing the worst natural disaster the country has ever seen. The prefectures of Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate saw towns swept away and their worlds come crashing down.

I lived and taught in Iwate for 2 years, and to see the homes of friends, co-workers, and former students shattered beyond recognition has been a heartbreaking ordeal. However, it is nothing compared to the tragedy the Japanese themselves face.

Japan faces one of its most devastating natural disasters in 100 years. On March 11th, walls of water swept across rice fields, engulfing towns, dragging houses onto highways, tossing cars and boats like toys and consuming lives. The potential human loss is unimaginable, with thousands missing and early reports of hundreds reported dead. Aftershocks and additional earthquakes continue to threaten the region, sending shock waves across the nation and the world.
